fdnmmtiln Road
(?!n Of Olnmo ntt &Iountil of Or Ong of boutil Ainit PARK AND RECREATION COMMITTEE
The March 26,1984 meeting of the Park and Recreation Committee
was called to order by its Chairman, Councilman Joseph Serge at 4 :.40 p.m.
in the Council informal meeting room.
• Persons in attendance included; Councilmen Braboy, Puzzello, Paszek,
Serge, Crone, Voorde, Beck, and Zakrzewski, James Seitz, Carol Sheetz, Robert
Niezgodski, and Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand.
It was noted that the meeting had been called by Vice-:Chairman
Puzzello to discuss Bill No. 27-84.
Park Superintendent James Seitz then explained that Bill No. 27-84
would appropriate $1, 060, 000 of funds from the U.S. Dept. of Interior and
$34, 697 of funds from the U.S. Small Business Administration to the Park
District Bond Construction Fund for a total amount of $1,094,697. Mr. Seitz
noted that the East Race Way was 97% completed and that the money had been
used for grading, excavating, landscaping and renovating. of the old abandoned
raceway into a• canoe and kayak course, fish ladders, boat ramps, trails, benches ,
and a hydro-electrical generator.
Councilman Serge asked whether any land was available for lease and
Mr. Seitz said there was not. Councilman Puzzello was advised that Redevelopment
should be contacted with regard to prospective shop locations. Mr. Seitz
noted that it would be 1986 through 1987 before the cold water fish would be
running.
Councilman Voorde asked whether Mr. Weinberg' proposal for an
alternate site for Frederickson Park on the west side of town was being
considered. Mr. Seitz declined comment on whether the Park Board would change
its decision on the park location. .
Councilman Crone asked when the Council would have an update on the
safety and security plans for the East Raceway. She noted that she had
volunteered to assist for the planning of the raceway as a private individual
but,had never been contacted. Mr. Seitz noted that the volunteers have been
meeting and that Councilman Puzzello was the Council representative.
Councilman Voorde thought the Tribune editorial had been unfair
regarding the security issue. It was noted that the City had not accepted the
project and that it was still under control of the contractor. It was also
noted that Island Park was under the control of the Board of Works but
maintained by the Park Department. Mr. Seitz noted that he had refused to
pay for the canopies at Island Park.
Following further discussion Councilman Puzzello made a motion seconded
by Councilman Paszek that Bill No. 27-84 go to1Cbuncil favorably.
