lxIommtYtrr 3i'r,pnrt MI tilt (gammon.(IIounrtl of tip (IIttj of bout!! linib: PUBLIC SAFETY The March 26, 1984 meeting of the Public Safety Committee was called to order at 5 : 55 p.m. by its Chairman Councilman Robert Taylor in the Council informal meeting room. Persons in attendance included Councilmen; Taylor, Braboy, Zakrzewski, 'Paszek, Puzzello, Crone, Voorde, Beck, and Serge; Carol Sheetz, John Leszczynski, Dick Maginot, and Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand. Mr. Leszczynski then explained Bill No. 26-84 which would appropriate $75,000 of revenue sharing money for the building of a new east sector sub-station. He noted that the existing house is located at 420 N. Francis St. It was recommended that the building be demolished and re-built. He noted that the new structure will be compatible with the neighborhood, and that $15,000 had already been approved. Councilman Crone questioned by the'_Council should act on the appropriation bill now. She did not see that it was a necessity especially since the City was only in the design phase. She noted that she was not proposing a delay just for the sake of delay but rather thought the City should know what it was getting for its money. Mr. Leszczynski reinterated that the building was unsafe and that . within approximately 30 days they would have -designs ready. Approximately 10 to 15 thousand dollars would be paid for designs. He noted that 3 estimates had been received from contractors to take down the building and build a new structre all for less than $75,000. John Voorde expressed concern about going forward with the project when no plans were in hand. He questioned whether the City was committed to the site, and was advised that it was. Councilman Braboy noted that the cost factor should be carefully weighed since construction fees are always going higher. Councilman Paszek noted that it was similar to the position he was in as Portage Twp. Trustee when faced with buying the old TCU building. Councilman Puzzello did not want to take any action to put off the project. Carol Sheetz questioned how large the building would be and was informed that the City projected 1,600 sq. ft. with a full basement. Councilman Beck wanted to control the final costs and expressed concern about appropriating money now and then being expected to pay more money later. Councilman ;Voorde asked who the designer was, and was informed that it was Korbuly-GT- ,Inc, with offices at 340 S. Columbia. Following further discusiion by the Committee Joseph Serge made a motion seconded by Beverlie Beck to recommend Bill No, 26-84 favorably to Council. No action was taken on the motion since Councilman Serge was not a Committee member. Councilman Beck then made a motion seconded by Councilman Taylor that the Bill No. 26-84 go to Council favorably. The motion lost 2-2 . Councilman Zakrzewski then made a motion seconded by Councilman Crone to continue the bill for 30 days. The motion lost 2-2. Since the Committee could not come to a concensus, ,, the Bill will go to Council without a recommendation.
