Beck at 3 :00 p.m. in the Council informal
meeting room.
Persons in attendance included: Martha Choitz, John H. Oxian, Louis
Hegyi, Leslie Choitz, Michael Medich, Donna Medich, Karen Kiemnec, Ron
Snyder, Lee Brubaker, Tom Brubaker, Councilmen Beck and Puzzello , Michael
Vance, Micki Dobski, Gust Saros , Irene Gamman, Donald Sporleder, Kathleen
Cekanski-Farrand and members of the news media.
President Beck began the meeting by inviting everyone in attendance to
tour the Fredrickson House.
Following the tour, Karen Kiemnec gave a slide presentation of the
Fredrickson House. The property was purchased in 1891, and the. Fredrickson
House was built in 1897 in Queen Anne Style
President Beck noted that many of the personal property items would
probably go much higher at an auction than the prices marked on each piece.
She noted that the roof and the porch are in bad condition. The appraisal for
the house was $125 ,000 and $125,000 for its furnishings .
John Oxian noted that for a year and a half, Southhold has been trying
to buy the. house. He believed the bank should have been more cooperative.
Southhold planned to move its offices there and rent out room for bridge
clubs , meetings, etc.
Councilman Beck noted that presently there was not alot of interest shown
by the. Common Council for the project. She believed tha all possible
alternatives should be pursued.
Mr. Brubaker suggested a "combine" where five individuals each
advances $50,000. Mr. Vance noted that ideas like that and others are why
this meeting was called. Costs for purchasing, refurbishing, maintenance,
utilities etc should all be considered.
Mr. Sporleder saw the Fredrickson House as a couununity resource which
has an "effective location". He noted that "substantial dollars" would be
needed to bring it to life.
Mr. Saros noted that Discovery Hall wished to do something regarding the
candy business. He added that there is alot of South Bend history in the
building. The estate has a Dodge., Packard, and a 1902 Electric Detroit car
(:the latter is located in the basement and is without a frame) .
Karen Kiemnec stressed the need for the community to see it Mrs .
Choitz discussed a possible "Friends of Fredrickson" campaign where bridge
clubs, businesses, the Chamber of Commerce, etc. would all become involved.
The building is "historical, unique, peculiar, and unusual" and "could go" .
Tours, involvement by the Southhold Board and a possible resolution by the
Common Council were all then discussed.
►wsc ►wqi GOISPis PUBLISHING CO.
