A third brother had settled on Section 13 - Clay Township. In 1873, <br />Frederick Cowles came to St. Joseph County and his brother went to Michigan. <br />Frederick had just married his second wife, Elizabeth Kinkaid Leake. <br />Although there was already a house on the property, Frederick decided to build <br />a new one to replace it. He had the wood sawn at his brother"s mill and hauled <br />to Clay Township. The house.was finished aroudn 1875. <br />Frederick Rufus Cowles died May 17, 1878. Elizabeth Kincaid Cowles died March 30, <br />1914.
