1151` Adams (S.R. 23) <br />legal description <br />East 30 Acres of the East 1/2 of the <br />North West 1/4 and the West 30 Acres <br />of the West 1/2 of the North East 1/4. <br />Section 17 Township 38 Range 4E <br />historical notes <br />The oldest portion of this house was built around 1847, <br />while the property was owned by Jacob Smith who later <br />moved to Cass County, Michigan. The main portion was <br />built before 1875, while the property was owned by <br />Michael Smith, who purchased it in 1851 (he may have <br />been a relative of Jacob). Michael Smith came to St. <br />Joseph County from Starke County, Ohio in 1842. He was <br />born in Germany in 1824 and came to this country at the <br />age of two. <br />The property was pictured in the 1875 Atlas and was called <br />"The Pines". <br />Michael Smith owned and farmed the 360 surrounding acres <br />until the 1890's when the property was broken up and sold. <br />The house and 80 acres surrounding were sold in 1906 to <br />E. Louis Kuhns and Ida Studebaker Kuhns. (She was the <br />daughter of Jacob Studebaker.) They sold the house and <br />the land in 1910 to Charles Arthur Carlisle and Anne Stude- <br />baker Carlisle.
