THE "J. M. S." BUILDING
A TRADITION IN DOWNTOWN SOUTH BEND
Built in 1910 for John M. Studebaker, the J.M.S. Building is a vibrant entity in downtown
South Bend. Located on the northeast corner of Main and Washington Streets, the eight -
story office building is close to the Court House, the City -County Building and the new
First Source Bank -Marriott Hotel complex.
The exterior design is ornamental, graceful and dignified. The building is easily identifiable
from the main highway by a graceful sign on the north facade. The first story starts with
polished granite with the balance of the street fronts of ornamental enameled white terra
cotta. Energy saving windows which carry through the design of the building have been
installed on the Main and Washington Street fronts. Each office has individually controlled
heat and air conditioning through a water source heat pump system. The entire building has
been remodeled and modernized since 1971, making it among the finest in South Bend.
(Illustration taken from original architect's rendering)
A.G.A.
