CITY OF SOUTH BEND: COAL LINE TRAIL (PHASE II) 12 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />SUCCESS STORY: EEL RIVER TRAIL & BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION <br />Client Contact: Mercedes Brugh, 812.272.7417 | Constructfon Cost: $1.7 million |Team: Susan Al-Abbas, Dale Wills <br />PROJECT DESCRIPTION <br />The Eel River Trail is a 1-mile-long trail constructed through downtown Logansport that included a 3 -span bridge over the Eel River. As any <br />project in an urban area, the project had challenges. Dale was able to work with the contractor, City, and other stakeholders to foresee <br />potentfal problems and adjust schedules and the order of work to eliminate or mitfgate them. They completed the project on-time and <br />within budget. <br /> <br />PROJECT WORK INCLUDED <br />» Constructfon of 1-mile multf-use trail <br />» Constructfon of a 3-span Bridge over the Eel River <br />» Landscaping along the trail and at two adjacent parks <br />» Installatfon of storm sewers <br /> <br />KEY CHALLENGES & SUCCESS STRATEGIES <br />Managing the Critical Path <br />On this project, managing the critfcal path meant dealing with a difficult Contractor. Dale notfced early on that the Contrac tor was not <br />stfcking to the schedule and causing delays to the tfmeline. Dale stepped up to the plate and forced accountability from the Contractor for <br />the schedule, budget, and his work quality. He worked with the City, INDOT, and Contractor to address the Contractor ’s issues and <br />concerns to move the project along. It was Dale’s daily and persistent communicatfon with the Contractor that led the job to be completed <br />within budget and on schedule. <br /> <br />Understanding the Project’s Impacts <br />When Dale notfced drainage issues along the trail, he worked with the Contractor and City to include adjustments to the grade of the trail <br />and milling and resurfacing of the adjacent roadway to provide better overall drainage. <br /> <br />Coordination with Utilities to Ensure Smooth Relocations <br />Dale adjusted the alignment of the trail in the field to reduce the impact to utflitfes and obstructfons, to ensure the proje ct contfnued <br />successfully. <br /> <br />Maintaining Traffic to Minimize Disruption to Local Residents & Business Owners <br />By only closing lanes when absolutely necessary, Dale was able to was able to minimize impacts to the travelling public. <br /> <br />“Next time we need an inspector, please assign Dale Wills.
