INFORMAL MEETING OF THE COMMON COUNCIL <br /> South Bend,Indiana 46601 <br /> The April 21, 2004 Informal Meeting of the South Bend Common Council called pursuant to <br /> the Informal Meeting Notice dated April 15,2004(copy attached)for the purpose of having a <br /> tour of the new Central Fire Station, was called to order in the parking lot of Central Fire Station <br /> which is currently under and located at 1222 Michigan Street,at 4:00 p.m. by Council President <br /> Karen L. White. <br /> Persons in attendance included Council Members Varner,Kuspa,Kirsits,Dieter,Puzzello and <br /> White;Asst. Fire Chief for Services Richard Switalski; Asst. Fire Chief for Inspections and <br /> Operations Howard Buchanon,11; Battalion Chief for EMS Randy Magdalinski; Battalion Chief <br /> for Special Operations James Lopez; Company Representatives of DLZ,Manager of Secretarial <br /> Services Mary Ann Myers,Director of Public Works Gary Gilot, City Engineer Carl Littrell; <br /> Director of the Division of Environmental Services John J. Dillon; members of the news media <br /> and Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand,Council Attorney. <br /> Council President White thanked everyone for coming for a tour of the new fire station. She <br /> noted however that the City Administration has asked for a few moments to bring information <br /> to the Council on one of their"Clean City"proposed components. <br /> Mr. Dillon then reviewed a 14-page handout(copy attached). <br /> Mr. Gilot noted that the Board of Public Works will have a bid <br /> opening <br /> next on trash <br /> containers and trash trucks. It was the hope of the Administratio that the Council could hear <br /> the concept today, and then discuss the ideas set forth in the "Clean City"handout at a later date. <br /> Council President White suggested that the information briefly highlighted by the Administration <br /> be sent to the appropriate Council Standing Committees so that proper meetings and additional <br /> Iq <br /> information and discussion can be take place. <br /> Company Representatives of DLZ then provided a 14-page handout to the Council Members <br /> entitled"South Bend Fire Department--New Headquarters and Central Fire Station"(copy <br /> attached). They noted that the new construct will consist of 56,200 square feet for the 2-story <br /> structure which will also have contain a basement. The construction cost is$7,247,000 with the <br /> ground breaking taking place on June 25,2003 and the completion date originally set for June of <br /> 2004 which will be pushed back. <br /> A tour of the new Headquarters and Central Fire Station was then conducted by DLZ and South <br /> Bend Fire Department representatives with the Council walking through the basement area, and <br /> the 1st and 2nd floors under construction. <br />
