We believe it is high time to <br /> Fred Ferlic sing the praises for the work which Schuyler Colfax did for our country and our <br /> Fourth District community. We, as another generation of countless Americans continue to enjoy <br /> today the results of his many labors. <br /> David Varner <br /> Fifth District <br /> Schuyler Colfax, as Speaker of the House of Representatives, labored long and <br /> Oliver J. Davis hard for the passage of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution. <br /> Sixth District These three (3) Amendments focused on critical civil rights. The 13th Amendment <br /> Derek D. Dieter outlawed slavery; the 14th Amendment focuses on no one being deprived of life, <br /> At Large liberty and property without due process of law or deny anyone equal protection <br /> under the law; as well as overriding the provision which counted slaves as 3/5's of <br /> Gavin Ferlic a person and prohibited the United States from paying any of the Confederate war <br /> At Large debts or compensation for lost slaves; and the 15 Amendment protects the rights <br /> of citizens to be able to vote, regardless of their race, color or previous condition of <br /> Karen L. White servitude. <br /> At Large <br /> We are calling for volunteers to work in collaboration with the Common Council to <br /> begin creative, educational activities which would culminate annually in South <br /> Bend to celebrate Schuyler Colfax in March of each year. <br /> The movie Lincoln has brought a special focus on this statesman, orator, 17th Vice- <br /> President of the United States,who is buried in South Bend's oldest City Cemetery. <br /> We ask you to join us in honoring and recognizing Schuyler Colfax, and encourage <br /> our schools, our residents and businesses to join us each year in developing <br /> educational, fun, inter-active and historical endeavors. <br />
