Commifta c 20 t: <br /> U_IL. .-L! _ . .mie _- <br /> The June 14, 2004 meeting of the Community and Economic Development Committee was <br /> called to order by its Chairperson, Council Member Roland Kelly at 4:18 in the Council Informal <br /> Meeting Room. <br /> Persons in attendance included Council Members Dieter,Pfeifer,Kelly,Puzzello,Varner, <br /> Kuspa, Coleman,and White; City Clerk John Voorde, Terry O'Brien,John J. Wheland,III;Jeff <br /> Myers, Terry Bland of the South Bend Tribune and Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand,Council <br /> Attorney. <br /> Council Member Kelly noted that the first item on the agenda was to review Bill No. 04-64 <br /> which is a proposed resolution which is a five(5)year residential real property tax abatement <br /> request for the property located at 925 North Notre Dame Avenue for John J. Whelan III and <br /> Molly O'Neill Whelan. <br /> Terry J. O'Brien, an Economic Development Specialist with the Department of Community& <br /> Economic Development reviewed his report dated May 27,2004 (copy attached). He noted that <br /> the petitioner proposes to build a single family home which will be 2,400 square feet and <br /> estimated to have a value of$250,000.00. The report concluded that the petitioner meets the <br /> qualifications for a five(5)year personal property tax abatement under Section 2-77.1of the <br /> South Bend Municipal Code addressing single family real property tax abatement. <br /> Mr. John J. Whelan IlI then made the presentation. He noted that he,his wife and their four(4) <br /> young children moved back to South Bend from Evansville. He was a student at Notre Dame <br /> and worked at Madison Center and the Center for the Homeless. They want to live in the <br /> southeast neighborhood while he works at the University of Notre Dame. <br /> There was no one present from the public to speak against the tax abatement request. <br /> Following discussion,Council Member Coleman made a motion, seconded by Council Member <br /> Kuspa that Bill No. 04-64 be recommended favorably to Council. The motion passed. <br /> Under miscellaneous business,Jeff Myers noted that he will soon be leaving to begin graduate <br /> school at Georgia State.
