number of employees has grown from 1,382 to 1,888. The New Jersey branch has grown and one
employee from that office will be moving to South Bend. Certain Departments in the South Bend
facility have increased in employee numbers such as international tax and risk management, but
these do not make up for reductions, particularly IT.
Another factor which makes employment more difficult is the conversion of the accounting
degree from a four year program to a five year program. This has reduced the number of
applications. However,if all goes as well,34 new persons will be starting in South Bend in January
2005.
It was also noted that although the employment figures are below expectation,Crowe Chizek
does have a positive impact on the local economy because it sponsors training programs. In fact,
within the last week in the tri-state area 150 persons came to the South Bend facility for a training
program and stayed in local hotels, ate in local restaurants, etc.
In short, Crowe Chizek is continuing to work toward its goal of 150 new hires over the next
seven years, and its past difficulties are tied to economic factors beyond its control.
Committee member Kelly stated that the purpose of the hearing was to simply determine
what caused the problem and if a good faith effort has been made by the firm. Mr.Kelly pointed out
that the jobs provided by Crowe Chizek are highly paid and have a very positive impact on the local
economy.
One of the Crowe representatives noted that there will be eight interns starting between
January and May who are recruited from local and surrounding colleges. Committee member Pfeifer
asked as a courtesy that when Crowe Chizek ultimately provides its report of employment that it
indicate the schools from which interns and new employees are hired.
There being no miscellaneous or other further business to come before the Committee,
Chairperson Kelly adjourned the meeting at 4:05 p.m.
