While inspecting the line, Sewer Dept found roots in the sewer so they used their
root cutting equipment to cut thru the roots. After two entries to get thru the sewer, their
equipment became stuck in the sewer. The sewer is located behind homes within a 20’
easement. Chain-link and wooden fences as well as large trees and landscaping are present in
the easement. The sewer is 8” diameter and roughly 14’ deep. Other utilities exist in the
easement as well. It is our understanding that the resident plans to file a claim regarding the
sewer back up. Sewer Department monitored flow levels in the sewer over the weekend and
was ready to install a bypass line if sewer levels rose.

Due to the depth of sewer, presence of other utilities, impacts of the cold temperatures on the
bypass equipment, challenging access, contractors were solicited to perform the work with
assistance from our Sewer Department to come back vegetate the areas in the spring that were
damaged during construction. Access is very challenging considering there is no easement that
leads you directly to the location without taking out several large trees and fence.

On Friday 1/15, two contractors were solicited for availability to perform the work, R&R
Excavating and Selge Construction. R&R did not have equipment available to perform the work.
Selge responded that they could mobilize with equipment and crews on Monday 1/18.

Description of work:
The Sewer Department and contractor coordinated with the resident at 52411 Courier Court
who accommodated access thru their property to the work location. This access was the most
desirable to avoid damaging the newly completed concrete driveway at 52398 Courier Court.
On Monday 1/18, Selge mobilized and started removal of the fence on the west side of 52411
Courier Ct. which is a straight shot to the area where the cutter got stuck as a means of access.
Then the contractors tree clearing and trimming branches on a descent size tree which sits on
the 52433 Cavalier Ct. property. An excavator was brought in to perform the 15’ dig. Shoring
boxes were delivered and excavation and removal of the sewer segment where the cutter was
stuck. Cutter was successfully removed. The sewer was reconnected and backfilled and
compaction ensued. Due to the soils being so soft in these backyards, sand was brought in to
finish the backfill. The impacted yards were regraded and reseeded by Sewer Department in
Spring 2021. Selge completed work by 1/21/21.
