tommtttce Upon <br /> (ommunttt aub etonoutit atinloinntnt QCommitt * <br /> The October 14, 2002 meeting of the Community and Economic Committee was called to order by <br /> its Chairperson, Council Member Karl King at 4:00 p.m. in the Council Informal Meeting Room. <br /> Persons in attendance included Council Members Aranowski, Pfeifer, King, Kuspa, Varner, <br /> Kirsits, Coleman and Kelly; Community &Economic Development Director Jon Hunt, Economic <br /> Development Assistant Director Michael Beitzinger, Mark Johnson,Terry Bland of the MO <br /> eUb 'etOttnt and Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand, Council Attorney. <br /> Council Member King called for a report on Bill No. 02-77 which is a three (3) year real property <br /> tax abatement request for Larry C. and Carol! A. Johnson for the property located at 3227 West <br /> Sample Street. <br /> Economic Development Assistant Director Michael Beitzinger reviewed his report dated October 7, <br /> 2002 (copy attached). He noted that the petitioner proposes to construct a 6,000 square foot <br /> addition to the facility located at 3227 West Sample Street which currently houses the South Bend <br /> Discount Liquor store and the store called "Karen for Your Hair". The total space would be <br /> divided into four (4) units each having at least 1,500 square feet. The total cost of the project <br /> ranges between $250,000 and $275,000. Mr. Beitzinger noted that the petitioner meets the <br /> qualifications for a three (3) year real property tax abatement under § 2-79.1 of the South Bend <br /> Municipal Code addressing"retail/commercial development in Urban Enterprise Zones". <br /> Mr. Mark L. Johnson, Secretary/Treasurer for South Bend Discount Liquors made the <br /> presentation. He noted that he would be available for any questions which the Council may have. <br /> Council Member Kuspa stated that he visited the area in question and spoke with the petitioners. <br /> He believes that the development would be a positive addition to the west side. He noted that the <br /> current stores are clean and well-operated, and that the new development would be an asset to the <br /> area. <br /> Following discussion, Council Member Kuspa made a motion, seconded by Dr. Varner that Bill <br /> No. 02-77 be recommended favorably to Council.
