SOUTH BEND, IN <br />Re: A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, IN SUPPORT OF PROCLAIMING <br />THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER AS HOPE FOR THE DAY'S 2021 <br />NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION AND ACTION MONTH <br />Dear Council Members: <br />Suicide is one of the leading causes of death, not only in ithe United States, but also <br />worldwide. In 2019, there were an estimated 1.38 million suicide attempts in the <br />United States with more than 47,000 deaths, equaling 130 suicides a day. <br />Hope for the Day is a non-profit movement empowering the conversation on <br />proactive suicide prevention and mental health education. Its work is represented in <br />all 50 states, 26 countries and 1 7 different languages. This proposed resolution calls <br />on the Mayor to support Hope for the Day's mission by proclaiming September as <br />Suicide Prevention and Action Month in South Bend and joining with local mental <br />health partners to work to eliminate the stigma of mental health issues. <br />We ask that this proposed resolution be filed and placed on the Health and Public <br />Safety Standing Committee agenda for consideration at its May 24, 2021 meeting <br />and then considered by the full Council at its meeting on the same date. <br />Thank you for your consideration. <br />Sincerely yours, <br />Hamann., South Bend Common <br />Council, Member At Large BILL NO. 21-22CORRECTED
