Milton <br />South Bend, IN 46601 <br />Local Landmark <br />PROPOSAL <br />The proposal is to change an existing vii ndoLo on the west <br />facade of an entry appendage in the 1959 addition from a. <br />recessed steel casement to glass block so that the t%iindow <br />surface is flush with the trial l . A flush treatment is <br />requested in order to prevent children from climbing onto <br />the roof by using the ledge for a foothold. <br />STANDARDS <br />B. Treatment <br />A treatment change . . . to the landmark . . . may [not] <br />. . . significantly alter the appearance of the landmark <br />. . . land] . . . the Commission should rev i e44i the proposed <br />treatment for character and style consistency . . . . [The <br />treatment] should be added in a manner that does not disrupt <br />the visual unity of the site. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />The t,.6 ndot&1 in question is located on a. non -major facade of <br />the 195? addition to the church. Changes to this feature <br />viould not si9ni.ficant1 affect the historic character of the <br />building. Hoviever, glass black is not an appropriate <br />miter i a.l . <br />Staff recommends that approval is granted to al 1 ovi the <br />change but strongly suggests that an alternative be <br />investigated such as the use of a metal storm vi i ndow <br />installed flush to the wall 4-,ii th the use a durable <br />reinforced glass. such as safety/wire mesh glass, p1exiglass, <br />or 1 exan glass. <br />blp <br />
