I. Purpose of Petition <br />The Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and <br />St. Joseph County hereby petitions the St. Joseph County <br />Council, under the St. Joseph County Ordinance Section 26.78. <br />120, to temporarily delay the issuance of any demolition permit <br />for the purpose of preparing a preservation plan for the <br />structure(s) at 14912 Brick Road, Harris Township, St. Joseph <br />County. Said delay will not exceed one year from the date of <br />the Council's action. The Historic Preservation Commission <br />reserves the right at the end of that one year period to <br />petition the Council for a continuance of any such council - <br />approved delay. <br />II. Property Description <br />The subject property of this petition is located at 14912 Brick <br />Road, Harris Township, St. Joseph County. This property is a <br />one acre site containing the former District No.l School Building, <br />a circa 1920's garage, and a 1988 garage. <br />The former District No.l School was built in 1892 for the Harris <br />Township School District No.l. The school was built by D. Werst <br />and Sons in a simple Queen Anne Style. It functioned as a school <br />until the 1930's and was converted into a private residence at <br />that time. <br />The school was declared a local historic landmark by the St. <br />Joseph County Council on September 28, 1976. Prior to the recent <br />fire, the school was potentially eligible for listing on the <br />National Register of Historic Places and the Indiana State Register <br />of Historic Sites and Structures. <br />III. Purpose of the Preservation Plan <br />The purpose of the preservation plan will be: <br />1)• to provide additional time to develop a reasonable and <br />-economical plan to save one of St. Joseph County local <br />"''' ..Historic <br />Historic Landmarks. <br />y,z;;_to provide for additional time for the determination <br />=fVhether the structure is salvageable, reconstructable <br />'.X,Z(ind/or restorable as to its deteriorated condition <br />resulting from a recent fire. <br />3),'�;xo provide additional time for a proper structural <br />evaluation of the structure -to be completed and to <br />investigate proper reconstruction and restoration <br />techniques. <br />
