istoric reservation co mosso <br />p on <br />of south bend and st. joseph county <br />February 11, 1988 <br />STAFF REPORT <br />Application for Landmark Status <br />RE: Navarre Cabin <br />Leeper Park <br />South Bend, IN 46501 <br />Proposal: <br />ROOM 1123 COUNTY CITY BUILDING <br />south bend, indiana 46601 (219) 284-9798 <br />Local landmark status is being requested by the Northern Indiana Historical <br />Society. The owner requests that the Cabin would be granted honorary <br />designation in conjunction with Hoosier '88 Celebration. <br />Standards: <br />A landmark must be rated at least an S/11 on the Indiana Historic Sites and <br />Structures Inventory and must be evaluated according to the following <br />criteria: <br />a. Its character, interest, or value as part of the development, <br />heritage, or culture of the City of South Bend, St. Joseph County, <br />the State of Indiana, or the United States of America; <br />b. its embodiment of elements of architectural design, detail, <br />materials, or craftsmanship which represents an architectural <br />characteristic or innovation; <br />C. its educational value; <br />d. its suitability for preservation; <br />e. its location as the site of a significant historical event; and/or <br />f. its identification with the life of a person or persons of <br />historical significance. <br />Evaluation: <br />The subject building is rated 0/13 on the Indiana Historic Site. and <br />Structures Inventory. <br />Criterion a: The building was constructed circa 1820 for Pierre Navarre, a <br />French fur trader and early St. Joseph County settler. <br />Criterion b: The cabin is the only known extant example of a log building <br />within the City of South Bend. Even though it has been altered by the <br />addition of a stone chimney in the 1930's, the structure does represent <br />a particular building type in which few examples remain. The structure <br />is the only known example from the early settlement period of St. <br />Joseph County and is associated with the first non -Native American <br />settler in the county. <br />
