South Bend Central Development Area <br />(1) continued... <br />Ms. Laurent noted that as part of the <br />Downtown Strategy, the Commission <br />recently acquired the 500 block of S. <br />Michigan Street. In doing so we committed <br />to study the best reuse potential of the block <br />as a redevelopment site, and to examine any <br />possibility of saving the structures or <br />portions of the structures that are historically <br />interesting to the downtown fabric. MPA <br />Architects has submitted a proposal for <br />professional services that includes <br />measurement and documentation of the <br />existing buildings and completion of a basic <br />feasibility or marketing package. This will <br />illustrate to potential developers our <br />preferred vision of stabilizing the front <br />portions of the buildings and undertaking a <br />partial demolition of the back half to allow <br />for a modernized footprint and parking. <br />MPA will complete that work for $7800. A <br />second option is to have MPA look at an <br />appropriate building type and use that would <br />complement the corridor should the buildings <br />need to be entirely demolished. MPA will <br />complete this portion of the study for $3750. <br />And, we have also asked for a proposal to <br />complete specifications for public bidding for <br />an immediate cleanup of the property, to <br />include removing and replacing boards that <br />secure the building and fresh paint. MPA <br />will complete the specs for $1875.
