8
Thank you for getting back to me. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have. I just got in touch with
Michelle and paid the application fee.
Regarding repair, we have considered it. We've run into a few hurdles with the idea though. First is whether we
could find anyone locally who might not only be able to repair/restore the sashes, weatherize them, etc. (something
that's unfortunately not possible on the windows that previous owners have already replaced), but also replace the
single pane glass throughout with low‐e double glazing. I haven't found anyone yet locally who does this. The
current windows are not only incredibly inefficient (many air gaps around the frame, etc.), but they also let a lot of
sound through the pane. This is a big problem on Laporte Ave partly because we get a good number of
emergency vehicles coming right by the house. If we were to remove the storm windows (which we would have to
do anyway to try to restore the original integrity), and then only have a single pane, we'd be in worse shape than
when we started! The second issue is finding a dependable restoration company in the area in general. We haven't
had much luck on that front. If you have any leads, I would gladly get their opinion. For instance, I haven't been able
to get hold of Schoberg Restorations (Plymouth), and others like Front Gate Indy aren't taking any new customers.
Maybe I should have put all this in the original description. I can modify it if you think I need to. All in all, we've
come to the conclusion that as an option, repair is just too complicated and expensive for us, especially if we end up
with something worse at the other end in terms of energy‐efficiency and sound abatement. I'd also be happy for
Adam and Ross to give their opinion on this when they visit.
Thanks again for taking the time to go over the application.
With best wishes,
Alexis
On Tue, Feb 2, 2021 at 2:33 PM Elicia Feasel <efeasel@southbendin.gov> wrote:
Greetings –
Thank you for emailing a COA application for your project. If she is unavailable, please
leave a return phone number and she will return your call.
I’ve quickly glanced at your project to determine that the project would need to be reviewed by the Historic
Preservation Commission and can be included on the February 15, 2021 meeting agenda. As I work to build that
staff report and recommendation, I may contact you with questions. For window replacement projects, an
evaluation by a window repair professional is helpful to demonstrate to the Commission that window repair has
