5
happiness and wellbeing in the house, I hope it is. As someone who lived directly across the street from a
firehouse for three years in a downtown setting, I understand the desire.

I was reminded yesterday (when a city colleague on another team texted me about a strange draft she felt ‘blowing’ in
through her wall on her historic house) of an excellent book to recommend: “Restoring Your Historic House: The
Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” by Scott T. Hanson. It’s excellent, definitive, and easy to digest.

Best,

Adam Toering
Historic Preservation Specialist
Department of Community Investment
(574) 235‐7478
atoering@southbendin.gov
City of South Bend
227 W. Ok: sounds like you wanted a little more from the restoration perspective and the problems we see
it presenting. I've had a final go at the description to clarify this (attached), based on conversation with H. G.
Christman, and the fact that at least five of the windows are not original to the home (I'm not sure how many of the
windows are actually original). I'm puzzled by the sudden "beyond repair" emphasis which didn't come up during the
site visit or in other correspondence. How is that defined? It feels like the goalposts are constantly shifting. We're just
trying to keep the historic character of our home while making it livable. We also both have full‐time jobs, so
unfortunately this is a lot of extra stress, especially as it includes the prospect of not being able to get a good night's
sleep for the foreseeable future because of the sound abatement problems associated with our windows (even in a
hypothetically restored state).

Best wishes,
