618 Leland <br />legal description <br />Lot 24 <br />Burrough's Sub of BOL,115 2 <br />Ivey Number: 3 -01 -18/18 -730 <br />historical notes <br />Lot 24 of Burrough's Sub - division of Bank Out Lot 115 was sold from the <br />estate of Ricketson Burroughs to Frank Matthews on October 8, 1889 for <br />$325.00. Construction on the house must have been begun the following <br />summer as a mechanics lien filed against the property indicates the house <br />was finished in early October 1.890. <br />Very little information is available on Frank Matthews. The directory <br />for 1891 lists his occupation as a carpenter and as the J anitor for the <br />YMCA: Later, he became a partner in Matthews and Mills, a meat market <br />located on Main Street. The house and property were sold soon after <br />claims against them were paid off in 1891. <br />Placed in Class E (bungalows) by assessors in 1932, the house at 618 <br />Leland; was given the lowest rating in the class. A type 5 bungalow <br />was,considered to offer nothing to inhabitants save shelter. <br />-;Before 1905, Leland south of Portage was known as .Burroughs <br />Street, and 618 Leland was 556 Burroughs.. <br />
