March 20, 2008
To: Common Council
City of South Bend
From: Michael Neises
1043 Riverside Drive
South Bend, !N
Re: Petition for alley closure
Dear Council Members,
Our desire for an older home along with a strong impression that South Bend was
making a renewed commitment to its neighborhoods led my wife and I to move from
Granger in august of 2fl06 and purchase a previous rental property at t 043 Riverside
Drive.
One of the undesirable features of the property is a cross-alley on the north side
of our property, particularly because our home sits right on the alley without any buffer.
Our side door literally opens on the alley, with the risk of being hit by a vehicle
when opening the door or stepping out of the entryway. Traffic, though very limited,
moves too fast, and is of a "cut through" nature. It is generally an unsafe area as it
relates to traffic, and a particular concern for us as we age, and also when we have
our grandchildren over.
A second concern is the matter of privacy and safety, both for us and our
property. The alley gives access to individuals to our side and back property in a way
that makes us feel vulnerable at times, and we have had a few instances of teen boys
just hanging out in the alley, literally right under our windows.
We therefore, respectfully request that the Common Council render a favorable
decision and vacate the alley described in the ordinance.
Sincerely,
Michael Neises ~~~'!C~
~-~'ia~ $~ ~f~~~°~'~
n; 1j'4
~,:..
CCT`f CL~YD. 6G~~
