Health and Public Safety Committee <br /> 2005 South Bend Common Council <br /> The March 14, 2005 meeting of the Health and Public Safety Committee was called to order by <br /> its Chairperson, Council Member Karen L. White at 4:20 p.m. in the Council Informal Meeting <br /> Room. <br /> Persons in attendance included: Council Members Dieter, Pfeifer, Kelly, Pu7zello, Varner, <br /> Kuspa, Rouse, Kirsits, and White; Citizen Member Isabel Gonzalez, Martha Lewis, Building <br /> Commissioner Don Fozo, Assistant Fire Chief Howard Buchanon, Assistant City Attorney <br /> Ann-Carol Nash,Fire Chief Luther Taylor,Executive Director of the Department of Community <br /> &Economic Development Sharon Kendall,Rita Kopala, City Clerk John Voorde, Jeff Parrott of <br /> the South Bend Tribune, and Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand,Council Attorney. <br /> Council Member White noted that the Committee members include Council Members Kuspa, <br /> Varner,Rouse and herself, as well as Citizen Member Isabel Gonzalez. <br /> Council Member White called for a presentation on 2nd Substitute Bill No. 5-05 which would <br /> amend Chapter 9,Article 1, Section 2 of the South Bend Municipal Code in order to incorporate <br /> the most recent addition of the International Fire Code. <br /> Assistant City Attorney Ann-Carol Nash made the presentation. She noted that the ordinance <br /> would incorporate the most recent edition of the fire code and will automatically incorporate the <br /> most recent edition used by the State of Indiana. <br /> Building Commissioner Don Fozo stated that 8-10 years ago the state provided a form to use in <br /> this area. The most recent edition as proposed will automatically keep our Code up-to-date. <br /> Dr. Varner stated that it appears to be a housekeeping measure,to which Mr.Fozo said yes. <br /> Assistant Fire Chief Howard Buchanon spoke in favor of the ordinance. <br /> The Council Attorney noted that the most recent copies are required by state law to be kept on <br /> file in the Office of the City Clerk, and the ordinance also calls for such copies to be maintained <br /> at the Fire Department and the Department of Code Enforcement. <br /> Dr. Varner made a motion, seconded by Citizen Member Gonzalez that 2nd Substitute Bill 5-05 <br /> be recommended favorably to Council. The motion passed. <br /> Under miscellaneous business, Council Member White reminded the Committee that there will <br /> be a meeting on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Police Station to go over various public safety <br /> issues including stun guns. <br /> Council Member Kelly noted that he would be unable to attend, in light of an Area Plan <br /> Commission meeting. <br /> March 14,2005 Health and Public Safety Committee of the 2005 South Bend Common Council -page 1- <br />
