2005 Annual Report Health and Public Safety Committee <br /> Date: December 9, 2005 <br /> To: The South Bend Common Council <br /> The Office of the City Clerk <br /> From: Karen L. White, Council Member At Large, and Chairperson <br /> Health&Public Safety Committee <br /> I am extremely pleased and honored to have served as Chairperson of the Health and <br /> Public Safety Committee, and to file the 2005 Annual Report of the Health&Public <br /> Safety Committee as required. <br /> The Health and Public Safety committee: <br /> "Oversees the various activities performed by the Fire and Police Departments, <br /> EMS,Depart of Code Enforcement, ordinance violations, and related health and <br /> public safety matters" <br /> Committee members included: <br /> Council Member Ervin Kuspa,Vice-Chairperson <br /> Council Member Timothy Rouse <br /> Council Member David Varner <br /> Citizen Member Isabel Gonzales <br /> The Health and Public Safety Committee met twenty-one (21)times. This committee <br /> along with the Zoning and Annexation and Personnel and Finance Committees continue <br /> to be very active. In addition,joint committee meetings were held with the Personnel and <br /> Finance Committee to hear presentations on the salaries and monetary fringe benefit <br /> proposals for members of the police and fire departments. <br /> This year's salaries and monetary fringe benefit proposals for members of the police and <br /> fire departments were negotiated,resulting in extensive discussions and many meetings <br /> that began late July and concluded December 2005. This,year,negotiations were <br /> successful with the Police Department(contract ratification)though not with the Fire <br /> Department. <br /> Health and Public Safety Issues Assigned under Privilege of the Floor: <br /> ➢ Pit Bull Regulations <br /> ➢ Wood Burning Stove Regulations <br /> ➢ EMT Specialty Pay <br />
