2005 Annual Report of the Community Relations Committee Date: December 20, 2005 To: The South Bend Common Council The Office of the City Clerk From: At Large Council Member Karen L. White, Chairperson Community Relations As noted in the South Bend Municipal Code,the Community Relations Committee is charge with the following duties: "Oversees the various activities of the Office of Community Affairs and facilitates the partnerships and ongoing communications with other public and private organizations." Committee Membership: This year's Committee members included: Council Member at Large Karen L. White, Chairperson Council Member Dave Varner Council Member Ann Puzzello Council Member Roland Kelly The Community Relations Committee held two meetings this year in relations to the work and partnership with our Sister City, in Czestochowa, Poland. In 1992,the South Bend Common Council adopted Resolution No. 1960-92 which formally ratified a Sister City Agreement with representatives of Czestochowa,Poland. In July of 1992, representatives of Czestochowa, Poland,met with representatives and citizens of South Bend, Indiana. On March 14, 2005, Mikki Dobski Shidler, Gabrielle Robinson, and Fred Thon made a presentation to the Community Relations Committee submitted entitled: "Expanded Sister City Committee Proposal" A similar presentation was given to Mayor Luecke. The focus of the proposal was to start new sister city relationships with cities in Africa and Latin America. On September 26, 2005 Gabrielle Robinson,Director of the International Program at IU South Bend, made a presentation in support of Bill No. 05-118 supporting a Sister City Relationship with South Bend and Arzberg, Germany.
