The "kind of malady, " the illness that decimated the family, <br /> is mentioned in Mary (May) Rohrer's obituary in: St . Joseph <br /> Valley Register (Indiana) : 1-5-1860(obit . ) . Epidemic disease was <br /> common in St . Joseph County in the early years as is typical in <br /> any frontier community. The year 1838 saw an outbreak of malaria; <br /> typhoid and cholera were also not unheard of before proper <br /> sanitation was practiced and water systems were developed.
