INTER-OFFICE MEMORANDUM

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
DIVISION OF ENGINEERING

TO:Board of Public Works
FROM: Becca Plantz, Project Engineer
SUBJECT: Mackey Drive Pump Station –Lafayette Falls Emergency Repair
DATE:October 2, 2020

In 2018, a small pump/grinder station was installed as a temporary sewer connection for two (2)
residential properties on Mackey Drive. At the time, these homes fronted an inactive sewer due
to the ongoing and phased work related to the subdivision development.
On September 21, 2020, the Sewer Department received a complaint about a foul odor coming
from the field adjacent to the pump/grinder station. The Sewer Department investigated the
structure, concluded the pump failed, and set up bypass pumping equipment to resolve the
issue. During bypass setup and exchanging an extension cord, the failed pump kicked back on
but turned off again overnight. Engineering confirmed that the pump had failed.

It was critical to replace the failed pump immediately so sewer crews could remove their
temporary equipment from the undeveloped lot. Our internal crews do not replace pumps and
future subdivision development (next phase) would not take place in a timely enough manner.

R&R Excavating initially installed the pump and grinder in 2018, so I requested their services on
Friday, September 25, 2020 to investigate and replace the pump if necessary. With emergency
approval confirmed, a crew from R&R mobilized on Monday morning September 28, 2020 to
clean the structures, remove, and replace the pump.

The Emergency project cost was $2,942.15. Please see attached invoice.

Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. Thanks!

We deliver services that empower everyone to thrive!!
