South Bend Fire Department <br />CommanderChassis <br />·All electrical terminals in exposed areas will haveprotective Coating applied completely over <br />the metal portion of the terminal. <br />·Rubber coated metal clamps will be used to support wire harnessing and battery cables routed <br />along the chassis framerails. <br />·Heat shields will be used to protect harnessing in areaswhere high temperatures exist. <br />Harnessing passing nearthe engine exhaust will be protected bya heat shield. <br />·Cab and crewcab harnessing will not be routed through enclosed metal tubing. Dedicated wire <br />routing channels will beused to protect harnessing therefore improving the overall integrity of <br />the vehicle electrical system. The design of thecab will allow for easy routing of additional <br />wiring and easyaccess to existing wiring. <br />·All braided wire harnesses will have a permanentlabel attachedforeasy identification of the <br />harness part number andfabrication date. <br />·All standard wiring entering or exiting the cab will be routed through sealed bulkhead connectors <br />to protect against waterintrusion into the cab. <br />BATTERY CABLE INSTALLATION <br />All 12-volt battery cables and battery cable harnessing installed by the apparatus manufacturer <br />will conform to the following requirements: <br />SAE J1127 - Battery Cable <br />SAE J561 - Electrical terminals, eyelets and spade type <br />SAE J562 - Nonmetallic loom <br />SAE J836A - Automotive metallurgical joining <br />SAE J1292 - Automotive truck, truck-tractor, trailer and motor coach wiring <br />NFPA 1901 - Standardfor automotive fire apparatus <br />Battery cablesand battery cable harnessing will be installed utilizing the following guidelines: <br />·All battery cablesand battery harnesses will havea permanent label attached for easy <br />identification of the harness part number. <br />·Splices will not be allowed on battery cables or battery cable harnesses. <br />·Forease of identification and simplified use, battery cables will becolor coded.
