Additional Information on Moving the Navarre Cabin
The History Museum intends to work with the HPC to apply for Local Historic Landmark Status for the
Navarre Cabin at its new site on our campus. Regardless of whether the landmark status application is
successful, we would request that it be made known to the Commissioners that, as a condition of COA
issuance, the Navarre Cabin continue to be covered under the protective oversight of the HPC. We
intend to continue to work closely with the Commission on issues regarding maintenance and upkeep,
and do not intend to make any updates or changes without HPC consultation and approval.
The cabin move is as follows:
1. Jack the cabin up off the stone piers.
2. Disassemble the stone piers.
3. Reassemble piers on new site.
4. Carefully move the cabin to the new site.
5. Slowly move into position and secure to new piers.
6. Clean up Leeper Park site and restore site to satisfaction of VPA and HPC.
The voids left and space underneath the building will be graded and seeded, as well as the burn marks
left from cabin programs and any other related features, with oversight from VPA. In the event that the
grass or other features are inadvertently damaged, The History Museum will include their repair in the
remediation of the site. Our intent is to leave the site a seamless part of the landscape. Tim Lykowski of
Lykowski Movers will be at the March HPC meeting to address any additional concerns or questions
regarding the move.
If VPA or HPC requests a marker to commemorate the site, The History Museum will furnish one to the
specifications requested.
18
