8. A test patch of the cleaning method(s) shall be reviewed and approved on site by staff of the Historic Preservation Commission of <br />South Bend and St Joseph County. Test patches should always be carried out well in advance of cleaning (including exposure m all <br />seasons if possible.) <br />9. Cleaning to remove corrosion and paint removal should be considered only where there is deterioration and as part of an overall <br />maintenance program which involved repainting or applying other approprinte protective coatings. Paint or other coatings help <br />retard the corrosion rate of the metal. Leaving the metal base will expose the surface to accelerated corrosion. <br />10. Repainting should be based on paint striation studies. If an adequate record does not exist repainting shall be done with colon that <br />are appropriate to the style a and period of the building. <br />The Landscapes- Specific Standard and Criteria was financed in part with funds from the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the <br />Interior, through the Massachusetts Historical Commission, Secretary of State, Michael Joseph Connolly.
