Overview of Project
I propose to build a picket fence in the side and back yard of our property. To create this fence I will be
using 3’ tall, 4.5” pickets with a 2.5” gap between pickets. I will use screws to attach these pickets to 2x4
rails. I will attach the rails to 4’ 4x4 posts set 18” into the ground and secured with concrete.
Materials
We will purchase our materials at LOWE’s. We will be using pressure treated lumber to help prevent rot,
fungal decay and termite damage.
Pickets ‐ will be 1x4.5x6 Dog Ear style pickets cut in half to create 3’ pickets. I will replicate the dog‐ear
pattern on the half that no longer bears this pattern.
Rails ‐ will be 2x4x12 rails where possible, and 2x4x8 rails for the sections that are shorter than 12 feet.
Posts ‐ will be 4x4x8 cut in half to create 4’ posts. These posts will be set into the ground 18” deep and
secured with concrete. Posts will be set 6’ apart except in three instances. Posts will be set 4’ apart at
each of the two gateways and the east‐facing run will include an 8’ section to fulfill the 12’ fence run.
Scale
This fence will enclose 612 square feet of our side yard.
Dimensions
The South side (facing Arch Avenue) will stretch 22’ wide and include a 4’ gate. The West side (facing
River Avenue) will stretch 30’ wide and will be inset from the sidewalk 1’; we plan to use this space for a
flower garden. The North side (facing our driveway) will stretch 18’ wide and will be inset from the
sidewalk 1’. The East side (facing our garage) will stretch 12’ and include a 4’ gate. Our house and hedge
will serve as the portion of the fence between the end of the east side and the beginning of the south
side.
Posts will be set 6’ apart except in three instances. Posts will be set 4’ apart at each of the two gateways
and the east‐facing run will include an 8’ section to fulfill the 12’ fence run.
Construction Methods
I will set 4’ posts 18” deep into the ground 6’ apart. These will be set into the ground with concrete. I
will run two rails spanning between each post around the entire perimeter. I will attach 4.5” dog‐ear
pickets, each 3’ long, at 2.5” spacing around the entire perimeter. Later this summer, once the treated
lumber has had a chance to dry, I will paint the fence white to match the color of the house.
