2
3. The most recent photographs I have in the file indicate that the foundation is painted with a white‐ish
paint. Based on the age of the structure, the brick was probably not originally painted, and this may have led
to the accelerated deterioration of the foundation. Painting/staining new bricks is generally discouraged by
our office. What sort of product is being proposed to paint/stain the bricks going forward?
4. What sort of mortar will be utilized (especially if new bricks and old bricks are to be used together?)?

I’ve taken the liberty of attaching an excerpt of the Standards and Guidelines with the text related to Masonry
highlighted for some context as to what we will be concerned with. I’ve also attached the application, which has a
checklist on page 3 for information that our office is looking for. I’ll be in the office on Tuesday if you want to speak
over the phone about the project. I will readily admit that I am not an expert when it comes to matters related to
masonry, and I am attempting to learn more about your profession (on Wednesday I attended a historic Lime mortar
class hosted by Henry Frerk Sons Masonry Restoration & Repair Services in Chicago that was taught by Simon Leverett
and Matt Wolf and I thoroughly enjoyed it).

As an aside: I’m familiar with you and your father’s work, as you did my front porch at 236 S Notre Dame Avenue back
in 2018. My wife Patti and I remain happy with how it turned out!

Best,

Adam Toering
Historic Preservation Specialist
Department of Community Investment
(574) 235‐7478
atoering@southbendin.gov
City of South Bend
227 W.
