South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - November 5, 1999
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
c. continued...
This commercial development is the
outgrowth of a comprehensive plan for the
West Washington Neighborhood which was
completed in 1990 and a strategic plan for
the Chapin and Western intersection which
was completed in 1995 by the West
Washington- Chapin Revitalization Project
and SBHF.
Subsequently, SBHF began to assemble land
on the east side of Chapin and Western
Avenue for the specific goal of future
commercial development which would serve
the residents of the Near West Side. In
addition, SBHF owns threes buildings on the
west side of Chapin, which includes the
former Chapin Street Clinic and the former
Naptown Riders. SBHF is currently
investing 5180, 000 in these structures in
preparation for a lease /purchase to El
Campito Day Care Center. SBHF will be
purchasing and improving one more
commercial structure on the west side of
Chapin Street in the year 2000. This
comprehensive commercial development
strategy is making a significant positive
impact on the social and economic
revitalization of the Near West Side
Neighborhood.
The Commission directed the staff to review
the two bids and present a staff report at the
November 19, 1999, Commission meeting.
-10-
