South Bend Redevelopment Commission <br />Regular Meeting - February 20, 1998 <br />iM0 DkI1iA ftIRI 10 &W <br />a. continued.... <br />Planning Division to meet with residents <br />in the southeast neighborhood who want a <br />new or rehabbed home is one of the goals. <br />He noted that there are a lot of good <br />programs through the Neighborhood <br />Planning Division, the Bureau of Housing <br />and other housing providers within the city <br />that can help people get into a better <br />housing situation. <br />Ms. Auburn reported that in the 1920s and <br />1930s, South Bend had the highest <br />percentage of homeownership than any <br />community in the United States. South <br />Bend was held up as a model community <br />because of the objectives that were <br />accomplished to increase homeownership. <br />Kyle Markham stated that "The one thing I <br />had a concern about is that 1 have seen <br />some of the homes going up around South <br />Bend in the past year or two being made <br />with shoddy materials less and than par <br />workmanship. 1 think any homes that I <br />would like to see go in there, I would want <br />to see quality workmanship and top -rate <br />materials. Other than that, you're <br />dooming the neighborhood five years from <br />now and it will be in worse shape than it is <br />in now. <br />Mr. Hunt asked Mr. Markham if he was <br />referring to a specific project within the <br />southeast neighborhood or to generality. <br />Kyle Markham responded "1'm referring <br />-11- <br />
