Approved by
Elicia Feasel
Historic Preservation Administrator
Commissioner Canada arrived at 5:51pm.
PUBLIC DISCUSSION:
Don Howard, 952 Riverside Drive — "Been there since 1997, we live between two of the lights that are
out — its been very, very dark in my part of Riverside for a long time. In addition to that
we have dealt with a long series of disruptions in service on these lines on individual
lights that would go out, stay out, for a long time. It serves as a disruption, as this is not
the first service disruption we have had in that neighborhood. Quite frankly, I'm
delighted to see a long-term, permanent solution is in plan here. I think it is very much
needed and will enhance the quality of life in the neighborhood and also increase the
safety within the neighborhood. We have had too many incidents in my immediate
stretch of Riverside Drive where the lack of adequate lighting may well have contributed
to some of those incidents that required the police to be called out. If I might, I would
like to register an opinion about the LED lights: I do think the existing LED lights further
east are too bright and would support the idea of dialing back the intensity in those lights.
I think it would be more conformable with the character and historical nature of the
neighborhood. But otherwise, I am really in support of this project.
Ed Talley, 1057 Riverside Drive — "This is the whole history of the Riverside Drive Historic District,
partially of East Wayne Street Local Historic District. All of this came about because of •
me, and that formed a street light committee by then Mayor Kernan, and the decision to
rewire a portion of Riverside Drive Local Historic District with new wiring was decided
and executed. There are two circuits on Riverside Drive that feed into the box on the
alley, one goes into Hudson, the other goes into Leland. There's nothing wrong with that
wiring. There's never been a problem with that wiring since it was installed some 23
years ago. The city made a determination based upon the cost involved at that time in
taking over the ownership and metering of these two historic districts, that they would
forgo the rewiring of the area feeding out of the central section of Leeper Park which
goes from Lafayette near here, to Leland. Part of those two circuits — one on Riverside
Drive ones on Leland — part of those circuits go interrupted. And once that project went
through its stage, it created a problem further down the line, and its never been able to be
rectified. I'm in total favor of this project, but only half of it. And I have a couple of
requests. One is, you are wasting city money by rewiring two circuits coming out of
Boland Avenue. There's no reason to touch it — there's nothing wrong, no reason at all.
There other part that comes out of Leeper Park does need to be re done. Going to an
additional expense to establish a new control box which we have been discussing on the
alley way, instead of leaving it where it is at in Leeper Park's central section — why waste
that money? Just rewire the circuit, and leave it as it is. Unless, because of the location
of where the control point is on Riverside Drive near Leland to Lafayette is the same
contractors who bring on the park lights circuits on Lafayette Boulevard, that's where one
of the real light poles is located.
In front of 916 Riverside Drive in 1916, the original "Park View" post with a 16" glove •
was installed a week before he died in San Francisco.
