NORTH SHORE DRIVE, SOUTH BEND, INDIANA
Project No. 1706-101
On Friday, March 9, 2018, Rick D. Keller P. E. met with Jo Broden, Mr. Molnar, and a
member of the Historic Preservation Commission. The purpose of the meeting was to
investigate whether all four columns on the front porch were load-bearing and to discuss
what is necessary to rebuild the porch
deck while remaining within the
guidelines of the Historic Preservation
Commission.
We first went to the attic space above
the porch and found that all four
columns appeared to be carrying
some load. The outer two columns
were carrying significantly more than
the inner columns. Nevertheless, they
should all four be considered to be
load-bearing.
The new porch is to be rebuilt with a
new brick and block or concrete perimeter foundation wall, a pea gravel fill, and a 4 -inch
exposed aggregate concrete porch
floor. If the cost of exposed pea gravel
concrete is excessive, the Historic
Preservation Commission would
permit a broomed finish.
At the columns, the foundation wall
and footings must be enlarged to
provide pedestals for the two columns
to bear upon. A careful examination of
the existing crawlspace under the
porch indicated that there were brick
pedestals under these columns in the
• original construction.
Keller Engineering, Inc.
54365 30t' Street • South Bend, Indiana 46635 • P: (574) 272-3525 • F: (574) 247-6006
www.KellerEngineeringInc.com
