Windmill
Goal:
We wish to install a windmill on the Kownover
Farmstead property.
Rationale:
To enhance the character to the property,
meeting our main goal of continually, but
reasonably, striving to restore the property.
Location discussion: Undated photo of original barn showing windmill
One historic photo in my possession shows a
windmill on the original farm. I presume the location of this windmill to be to the east of the location
of the now -non-existent barn. The aesthetic location of the windmill I propose is just to the east of the
green space formerly occupied by the barn. This places it clear of any toppling threat, clear of any
power lines, and presents a central location to the property near the silo for a vintage farm presentation.
Construction of the original windmill vs. what is proposed:
The detail of the photograph doesn't clearly discern what the windmill was made of, but it may likely
have been wood. It appears to be about 40' based on the known height of the original barn. •
Characteristics of the right windmill/process:
I will only consider a reasonably cosmetic (but having historic pedigree and showing age), safe in
structure, non -disturbing (sight and sound) windmill. Installation must be secure and ground access
reasonably restricted for safety.
Chicken or the egg?:
I need to know the commission's opinion on if there is a way to gain approval in theory, principle, and
by plan, even if not having a particular windmill in -hand. These items are not common on the market.
As well, I wish to reassure that I will not select just any windmill — Not knowing when a windmill
becomes available and knowing the process necessary for approval, I have been conflicted about how
limited I may be for final decision on purchasing one.
