South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - November 21, 1997
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
d. continued....
and unfortunately Steve Moerlein is not
here today. My understanding was that the
plans for acquisition of that block were not
crystal clear. It wasn't made clear to him
that the full block was going to be pursued
for acquisition. If we knew that at that
time, if my client was aware of that, I
agree there might have been a different
situation in pursuing our development
plan. We were not made aware of that
until our meeting with Jon Hunt back in
late July or early August, that the city or
Redevelopment was going to pursue
acquisition. At that time, if there was a 90
or 95 percent chance of acquisition, even
then, there wasn't indication of where we
are at today.
Mr. Hunt commented that at that point and
time he doesn't believe that it was definite
regarding the acquisition of that piece of
property, but the statement was made that
might not be the best use for the property
at 214 W. Jefferson Boulevard.
Ms. Schwartz commented that she is
voting in favor of adopting Resolution
No. 1547. She does so, recognizing in full
that certainly re -use of existing buildings
where that is the most appropriate overall
use for the general benefit of the
community. She felt that this is a situation
where recognizing the needs of the
downtown area for future office
development and for a quarter block of
land to make that happen.
