South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - November 21, 1997
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
c. continued....
The reference that Mr. Kil made to re -use
the building is in the Vision 2010 Plan as
opposed to the 1985 Redevelopment Plan.
GREG KIL: Again I'd like to point to the
study that I did, the graphic study showing
the proposed corner development. Our
building, again, would be only a 22 foot
frontage that would be superseded if you
were to retain this property and acquire it.
We think that this is a reasonable request.
The building is structurally sound, we feel
it has an attitude and integrity of South
Bend and acknowledges its history. This
building is special in that there are not
many other buildings like it that exist. A
lot of these fairly common, three or four -
story walkups with office or mixed use
with a restaurant or a walkup
commercial /retail on the lower level don't
exist because of the desire to remove them,
if they were not considered a positive or
the integrity of the buildings to retain and
to rehab. I think that is different now, I
think that there is a better understanding
that our stock of structures downtown,
what we have left, is special, even if they
are common. That is what I employ to
you to consider in our remonstrance today.
Ms. Schwartz commented that Mr. Kil
mentioned a walkup. She asked if the
rehabilitation of the building would
require construction of an elevator.
H:\ HOME\ CPHIPPS \WPDATA \COMMSN\112197.MIN -16-
