This may be due to a wet rot fungus,
Coniophora Puteana or a similar fungus. An attack of this fungus consumes the wood and
causes it to be soft and spongy. The wood loses its load carrying capability and destroys the
integrity of the structure.
Photos 4, 6 and 7 appear to show damage from termites. Termites consume the wood fibers and
leave the remaining timber with a weak straw -like lattice. This also destroys the load carrying
capacity of the'timber.
Much of the timber from this barn shows evidence of severe structural damage. Because of the
legal and moral liability of allowing an unsafe structure to remain, even if unused, it is prudent
to demolish buildings with severe structural damage.
17455 Douglas Road /' South Bend, IN 46635 / (574) 273-5014
