a
do with the barn down was a struggle from when we occupied the property. It
should have been condemned. fearing the barn down was one of the most difficult
decisions we had to make and we waited until selling the property before doing so.
When the decided to sell the property and downgrade, we listed the property with
Caldwell l3anker Realty l'or a contract period of 11 itiondis, During that time, we
had no offers but a lot of feedback. The most negative feedback was the barn. It was
considered a liability that many buyers (lid not want to deal with.
We had several contractors come out to look at repairing the barn, Most didn't want
any part of it. One Amish contractor gave us a bid to tear 4 layer of the roof off, jack
the foundation and replace beams with a starting cost of $110 thousand, plus
materials. To map and disassemble starting cost was 200 thousand plus midden
damage cost, which most likely would have cost over a half of a million dollars.
LOCAL HISTORICAL SOCIETY:
We have seen the local historical society once in the 12+ years we lived there.
My interactions with the Local Historical Society were contentious after the barn
was taken down. One day, a person by the name of Steve showed up to my property
unannounced. Steve did not introduce himself when he came to my door, l -le
started the conversation "what do you think you are doing"? He did not offer
credentials until our conversation ended. After the visit, Steve sent a letter calling
Mr. Sika. My name is Sokol, not Siko and i consider that an act of passive aggression.
I le said that I needed to go in front of a board and that the neighborhood was angry
that I tore the barn down. I asked to provide me one name but he refused to my
request.
I was not aware of any local requirement to have a certificate of appropriateness
until after the barn was torn down. I humbly apologize and my intent was not to
Ignore the local law. I didn't (understand what an after -the -Fact certificate would
prove and viewed this as an exercise of humility and that I had to appear before a
board committee to explain why I decided to tear the barn down. Please see the
attached exhibits for proof that the structure was beyond reasonable economic
repair. Thank you for your consideration.
Signed
1/r»oTNy a.
