lighting and two sconce lights were placed beside the restored barn doors. The barn doors have not
been painted yet.
Former barn wood
At the time of purchase
This area was occupied by a large pile of barn wood from
the former barn, stacked in random fashion, and was noted
as wood with only salvage value. Behind this pile was a
wire fence line that was disconnected in some places, and
over grown in a track about 10' wide with weeds. Ground
hogs and raccoons had made their home in this area and it
was deemed a nuisance.
Vision
In line with the goal of cleaning up the property grounds, the wood pile needed to be sorted for usable
or repurposable pieces and the brush/scrub plant areas needed to be cleaned to be mowable. The fence
was to be removed since it was not serving any purpose and did not seem to have a
venerable function necessitating replacement. OEM
Process
During most of last year, the wood pile was sought for pieces that coulc
purposed. Our first major project was the building of the centerpiece d:
that now adorns the grand dining room (see picture). As a home that ca
family of 18, it was build for just that size and purpose. Amish -style cL
craftsmanship was used and the finish matches the vintage wood that li
came from the property when the home was built. Other wood re-purpi
included making a mantle for the cottage fireplace, and incorporating p
custom counter tops of the cottage kitchenette.
Although projects were completely on -hold while working
through this process, we had envisioned other projects with the
barn wood — frame repair and trim replacement are considered
"next -up" projects with the barn wood, and we have been
discussing custom head and foot boards for beds in the home.
Remaining wood will continue to serve future projects as well.
Like the dining table, other pieces of furniture can be tooled for
the home.
