Four (4) options were developed, our elected
School Board voted to build a new Montessori Academy in lieu of renovating, investing
$17,000,000 in the Marquette area community. That part of the property where the old
building stood was to be used as green space for use by the students, staff, and Marquette
area community. The South Bend Common Council passed Bill 61-07 at the request of
the Historical Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County
designating old Marquette a Local Historic Landmark. The Mayor at that time, Stephen
J. Luecke, vetoed bill 61.07. The Councils legal advisor and the Mayor's legal advisor
disagreed over the Mayors power to veto, and this legal standoff still exists.
