Lafayette Blvd. <br />South Bend, Indiana 46601 <br />SUBJ: Application for a Certificate of Appropriateness to Demolish the Old <br />Marquette School. <br />Dear Ms. Feasel, <br />This correspondence is intended to provide additional information to he included with the South <br />Bend Community School Corporation's (SBCSC's) application for a Certificate of <br />Appropriateness to demolish the Old Marquette School building, located at 1905 College Street. <br />y A feasibility study was conducted by Hebard & Hebard Architects and presented to the <br />School Board of Trustees, on April 23, 2007. its purpose was to give the School Board <br />logical options and costs needed to evaluate and decide whether to renovate the old <br />building or construct a new building. Four (4) options were developed, our elected <br />School Board voted to build a new Montessori Academy in lieu of renovating, investing <br />$17,000,000 in the Marquette area community. (See attached Study Exhibit A.) The <br />original construction plans called for the demolition of the old Marquette School after <br />construction of the new building was completed. That part of the property where the old <br />building stood was to be used as green space for use by the students, staff, and Marquette <br />area community. The South Bend Common Council passed Bill 61-07 at the request of <br />the Historical Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County <br />designating old Marquette a Local Historic Landmark. The Mayor at that time, Stephen <br />J. Luecke, vetoed bill 61.07. The Councils legal advisor and the Mayor's legal advisor <br />disagreed over the Mayors power to veto, and this legal standoff still exists. (See <br />attached Exhibit B) <br />A The Old Marquette School last housed students during the 2010/2011 school year after <br />which they were moved into the New Marquette Primary Montessori Academy (MPMA) <br />in ,lune of 2011.
