We need to work with the city towards a comprehensive plan. After all, the area is a pretty healthy tax
base, but only insofar as the property has value. Flooding will quickly erode that value.
July 7 Of course we need a permanent solution. That's the main objective to our discussion as a
neighborhood and with the city. I offered my suggestion since there was discussion this morning on the
issue and a storm system on the way today... I live on the southeast corner of Eddy and Wayne with 3
drains on the corner of the street- my side alone. I will gladly cover them up and block the water as best
can if there is a chance it could help sewage coming into our homes. I cannot say I will be able to every
time there is a threat of large rain. Yes, it's not permanent, but possibly temporary. Temporary is better
than nothing in my eyes- esp. re sewage.
July 7 1 agree and am very thankful for your efforts—all of our efforts—both collectively and individually!
Isn't this a basic service the city should provide?
July 7 Dear Neighbors, We just had plumbers here. Apparently, there was so much pressure on our
sewer line Tuesday night, that the check valve actually snapped. We are now looking to have a new
check valve installed and hoping we don't get a storm in the meantime. There is nothing in place to
prevent another backup into our basement until the new valve is installed. This is going from bad to
worse, and it has gotten much worse in the past year. We never had such problems in the past.
July 10 We had water (not sewage) back-up through our sink and an old capped drain early on July 4th at
300 block of S. Sunnyside Avenue. We had had no back-up's for the first 10 years we have lived here but
this is the 3rd time in the last year - twice last year and then on July 4th.
July 10, 2017 We had sewage back up in the basement, and have had a few times since we have lived
here, five years now, last week. We will call 311 as well, but if you could add this to your report, that
would be great. We are at 1300 block of E. Wayne St. N.
July 10 We also had water come through our drain July 4. We had major water damage last summer as a
result of 4 inches of standing rain in our basement. I live at 1600 block of Wayne.
July 10 Some water through our basement drain as well. No sewer stuff fortunately. 1300 block of East
Wayne St. South. The City is surely aware of these continuing problems since we did have a
neighborhood meeting with city officials where this was all explained in detail. You worked hard to
schedule the meeting and we do appreciate your efforts. I find it puzzling that our real estate values for
tax purposes continue to rise when we have these continual water problems. If problem is not corrected,
and I am skeptical the City will act because of the cost to correct the problem, then, legally and ethically,
disclosure of the problem will have to be made to prospective buyers.
July 10 Bob, last year and this year we had water come in through the laundry sink that is unprotected.
1200 block, E Wayne South.
July 11 Thanks to everyone who is working to come up with a solution to all of these basement woes. I
just called and reported ours (July 4) to 311 and will continue to report future water issues. We have ball
valves in our drains that prevent the water coming up through that route, but water seeps in through
cracks in the floor and other areas (e.g. around support posts). Though the water coming in seems to be
"clean" ground water and not sewage, we are frustrated with the repeated cleaning required after
rainstorms. Am happy to do what what I can to be part of the solution. 1600 block Wayne.
