July 5 We did as well, only others time was the big rain and even then we only had a little. It appears our
check valve failed. Had it replaced and an additional shut off valve installed. Can anyone confirm that this
is being reported to the city engineer?
July 6 Just an FYI that our house is one of the East Wayne neighbors with flooding. The suspicious thing
is that the rain was only about 45 minutes in duration, there was no deep soaking of the ground in the 24
hours prior to this, and we have the shutoff valve on our sewer main and a ball valve on our floor drain
(Kieran himself came to verify this last fall 2016); our gutters are also all fully detached from the sewer
system and feed adequately onto hard runoff surfaces (driveway).
Our basement's water intake was about 15 minutes after the storm began, and lasted until about 10
minutes after the storm subsided (it rose and diminished in proportion to the rain intensity). We had 100%
ground water seepage, which is better than direct sewage. I walked our house perimeter during the storm
at about 3:15 AM; the gutters were all functioning properly and the driveway was also draining preprly to
the street --it was a very heavy rain. However, I also think there is a secondary link to the sewer line
backup problem --my guess is that when the sewer backs up, it also leaks at its joints and directly floods
the groundwater. How else would 2.5" of rain in 45 minutes saturate the ground water 12' below the
surface to the point of local flooding? And the basement flooding goes at least as far north to Greenlawn
and La Salle, if not further north and east. For us, this is the 3rd time in twelve months.
Thankfully this time we had our own water pump installed, which worked for about 25 minutes in total,
and which according to our pump's rating means we had about 650-700 gallons total in -flow to our
basement (including the adjustment for the vertical lift out of our basement). That's less than what we got
from the rain last August (we easily had 2000+ gallons then), but still astonishing given the conditions.
To put it into perspective, that's substantially less rainfall than August 2016, but still a lot of water
*despite* having the sewer totally shutoff to our house (the shutoff functioned correctly). That is, if we got
2.5" this time (August 2016 was 8"), and we moved 650 gallons (vs 2000+ for 8/2016), our total intake
ratio DID NOT SUBSTANTIALLY CHANGE (the ratio of 650:2.5 versus 2000:8 is 1.04:1.
Let's be honest --this is a new normal for the greater neighborhood, that is, until the city can remedy the
problem it has likely contributed to. We will work with our community members and elected officials
closely to find an effective solution.
We're grateful for any additional information and the city's continued partnership and help.
Yours,
July 5 At the meeting after the August flooding, Eric Horvath made it a point that the City needs to hear
from you - I have already sent him, Kieran Fahey and Randy Kelly an email about the water problems we
had at house on Tuesday morning. Mostly all clean/clear ground water seeping through walls and floors -
our floor drain has a ball valve that kept out any water - but our laundry sink did fill up and overflow.
July 5 1 don't think it would hurt to contact the City. We, however, did not get the cut-off valve, so our
getting water might be put on us. Our next door neighbors, however, did install the cut-off and still got a
couple of inches of water. ???
I am in favor of requesting another meeting with Eric. He needs to hear that we took his advice, made
upgrades etc and with 2 inches of rain (not the 100 yr rain fall) still had neighbors under water. Curious if
anyone monitoring sensors due to holiday evening? 1400 block Wayne
July 7 Hi (Name),
We are taking a two fronted approach to tackling this right now.
1. Sewer department- I'm coordinating with the sewer department manager to firstly gather
data and secondly get logistics such as sewer line cleaning and inspection undertaken.
