HPC Application attachment
Request permission to use Plygem trim on house as a substitute for
wood. Plygem is a compressed PVC material that is a superior product
for restoration work. Why?
1) Durability. When painted, it looks and feels like wood, but does
not rot, so detail work remains intact much longer.
2) Maintenance. Won't crack, swell or dry out, so paint lasts much
longer and looks better.
3) Cost. Clear trim boards 5/4" thick in long lengths have to be
special ordered and could double the cost. Plus would have to be
primed both sides before installation.
Attached:
a) Article "PVC Millwork Meets the Challenge of Historic
Renovations" (also see episode #9, season #35 "This Old House —
Belmont Victorian — True Colors" on line for expert trim
carpenter's discussion on advantages of PVC trim + use on old
house restoration)
b) Piece of Plygem compressed PVC trim for your examination
c) Piece of another type of "manufactured trim" that was approved by
HPC and used on 824 & 828 Park Ave., and 307 Lamont Terrace.
Advantages of Plygem compressed PVC trim over another previously
approved & used manufactured trim product:
Other product is made from compressed wood shavings & resins,
with a thin factory painted skin. Butt joints can swell with moisture
over time. Corners cannot be mitered effectively due to the
instability of a thinner slice.
Plygem compressed PVC trim will not swell & can be mitered at
corners for a more professional fit. Can be caulked, sanded, and
painted or full color stained to match the appearance of wood trim.
