Historic Preservation Commission <br />Local Historic Landmark <br />Nomination Form <br />Name of Nominated Building: Elbel House <br />Location: 806 Leland Avenue, South Bend, Indiana, 46616 <br />Reason for Local Landmark Designation: Summary <br />806 Leland seeks Landmark Status due to its fine character as an example of a <br />Oueen Anne Victorian, its excellent preservation and to the notable history of <br />its builder in 1894. Richard Elbel. <br />-806 Leland Avenue in South Bend is a fine example of Queen Anne <br />Victorian. Built in 1894, it is completely intact architecturally on the <br />exterior, and in very good, and generally original, condition on the <br />interior, thanks to a sensitive restoration in 2016. The house has <br />extensive exterior decoration including original spindle and fretwork, <br />all but one of its original windows on the first and second story, and <br />elaborate carpentry on the porch including wooden columns resting on <br />the original masonry supports. <br />-The house was built by a notable early resident, and a member of an <br />important clan in 19th and 20thcentury South Bend history, Richard <br />Elbel. <br />Describe the buildings connection to an individual, event or trend of <br />local or regional significance: <br />The Elbel Family <br />806 Leland was built in 1894 by Richard and Maude Elbel. The Elbel name <br />was of great importance in South Bend from 1848 when Johann Friedrick <br />Elbel, a 50 year-old musician and tile maker, along with his wife Anna <br />Susanna, came to South Bend from Arzberg, Germany.
