HISTORIC PRESERVATION CONIlVIISSION
PRESERVATION SPECIALIST REPORT
January 25, 2016
Hello Commission!
As you may imagine we do not have that many COA applications this time of year. Only
the most forward thinking property owners are that prepared for weather -permitting
exterior projects. Instead, my personal focus has been more on the timeline for special
projects such as the bicentennial, tours, and the tool crib in conjunction with Restore
Michiana Workshops. There is also the pressing issue of Minimum Maintenance Surveys
in Local Historic Districts and a revisit to our St Joseph County Landmarks as it has been
three years since MMS have been completed on those.
The Renaissance District (Union Station et al) is also working on documentation of their
renovation process along with monthly guided tours to allow community members to see
first-hand the progress. A guided historical tour of the facility is a part of the tours based
on the script that I originally wrote for the tour. Since I was involved with several tours
over the past 4 years they have requested that I assist with those tours. Although this is a
landmark, I did not feel that my limited hours should be spent on this project. If they
want me to guide the tours, they will have to compensate me as an independent. I only
mention this as there will be some social press mentioning my name and my position for
the commission. I just wanted to be clear that the activity will not come from my hours.
I will continue working on the schedule of events for the year and will make that
information available as it becomes more concrete.
The Studebaker Fountain project is just in its preliminary stages, but I am sure
Commissioner Anderson will be giving updates on that exciting undertaking.
Thank you,
Steve Szaday
Preservation Specialist
