Janowiak <br />Landmark or District Designation: Chapin Park <br />Rating: Notable <br />DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE/ SITE: The one and a half storey dormer front bungalow with clapboard at <br />the base and wood shingles above is set upon a concrete foundation. It has a side gable with a large gable from <br />dormer. There is a full width enclosed porch with windows and its roof is an extension of the main roof and <br />covered with asphalt shingles The house windows are 1/1 double hung; the porch windows are fixed sash with <br />vertical divides forming 3 upper lights and 2 lower lights. <br />ALTERATIONS: The roof is not original to the house; no other alterations appear to the exterior of the house. <br />APPLICATION ITEMS: A.Demo of house Structure. Exhibit A Attached. B. Demo of frame garage and wood <br />and wood/wire fence sections. Exhibit B attached. <br />DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT:- The South Bend Code Department is requesting that the house be <br />demolished along with the fencing and garage. <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: V GENERAL: <br />A. Buildings in the district should not be demolished except where a building poses a threat to the public safety, <br />and demolition is the only alternative. Documentation of interior and exterior features of the original buildings, <br />especially homes rated as historically significant, is encouraged. Measured drawings and photographs may be <br />submitted to the Historic Preservation Commission for safekeeping and future reference. <br />STAFF RECOMMENDATION: A. Staff does not recommend approve of the demolition of the house as no <br />structural assessment has been made from the interior. B. Staff recommends approval of the demolition of the <br />garage as it is deteriorated beyond repair and presents a hazard; the fencing also presents a hazard. <br />Catherine D.
