HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
PRESERVATION SPECIALIST REPORT
September 15, 2014
Hello Commission!
We had a GREAT workshop on Saturday at the Old Republic in New Carisle!
Russ Luchies from Midwest Masonry was our expert and helped us grind and re tuck old
failing mortar, new poor mortar, and even some ill -placed quik-crete that someone called
mortar. The pictures are online on Facebook and should be on the website by the end of
the week. This was the last of our hands-on workshops for the year and it is always
bittersweet for me as I do enjoy these workshops so very much. We have had over one
hundred attendees to the workshops as a whole this year and that is impressive! Next
year we will be glad to be a part of the exciting things going on at Indiana Landmark's
property on Chapin across from the Studebaker Museum. The entire house is going to be
set up for work shops throughout the year. Although this is not through Restore
Michiana, I am certain that Elicia and myself will be collaborators on some of those
presentations. Due to popular demand we will be doing an introduction to power tools in
spring.
Last week Catherine and I each took a bus load of Young Professionals on a
Local Historic Districts tour via chamber of commerce. This was a great bunch of people
that really did not know much about their city. It was so well received that Catherine and
I have assisted some of the real estate agents that were on the busses to find information
on some of their listings. Go US!
As fall approaches one of the greatest challenges that face us will be roofs and
gutters. Those that did not make repairs following last winter's wrath will be sorry this
year. Already you can see several more houses in areas (chapin park i.e.) that have
dislodged gutters and missing shingles. These houses have been turned into Code
Enforcement to send out their initial letters.
I am heading to Madison, Wisconsin this evening to attend the National
Preservation Institute series on Window Preservation. I applied and successfully received
a scholarship to attend the two day hands-on seminar. I will let everyone know how that
went next meeting.
Thank you,
Steve Szaday-Preservation Specialist HPCSBSJC
